The single most useful thing to understand is that these two towns are built around different kinds of water, and that decides more trips than price, nightlife or anything else.
Cabarete Bay is a wind-and-wave bay. That is precisely why it's here — the thermal wind that fills the bay every afternoon is what made Cabarete a kiteboarding and windsurfing town. It's wonderful if you want to sail, surf, kite, or watch people do it over lunch. It's a sport beach with a swimmable protected section, not a glass-calm swimming bay.
Sosúa is built around a protected swimming bay. Calmer water, more sheltered. If your picture of a Caribbean holiday is floating in flat turquoise water rather than watching kites, that is a real and honest point in Sosúa's favour.
The other difference: scale
Cabarete is a small beach town. That's the whole appeal for a lot of people — you can walk its useful length, you start recognising faces within a few days, and the restaurants sit on the sand. It's also the limit of it: it is small, and if you want more going on around you, you'll notice.
Sosúa is bigger and older-established, with a larger commercial base — more shops, more services, more of a functioning town rather than a strip. If a small-town vibe is specifically what you're after, that's Cabarete. If you'd rather have more around you, Sosúa has more.
You probably don't have to choose
This is the part that gets lost in the comparison framing. It's about 14 km by road — roughly 20 minutes between downtown Cabarete and Sosúa. That's a taxi, a guagua, or a short drive. Whichever town you sleep in, the other one is an easy afternoon.
So we'd genuinely rather you read this as two things close together than as a rivalry. If what draws you is Sosúa's calmer bay or its bigger commercial centre, that's twenty minutes from our front door and a perfectly good day out. People staying in Cabarete use Sosúa all the time — for bigger supermarkets and services, for errands, and for a calm swim when the bay is up.
Who should stay in Sosúa
- Calm swimming water is your first priority — especially with young children or anyone who doesn't want to deal with wind chop.
- You want a larger town with more shops and services within reach on foot.
- You're watching the budget: Sosúa generally sits a little cheaper, though for a one-week holiday rental the gap depends far more on the individual place than on the town.
Who should stay in Cabarete
- You want wind — kiteboarding, windsurfing, wingfoiling, surfing — or you want to be around it.
- You want a small, walkable beach town where the restaurants are on the sand and you recognise people by day three.
- You want to eat and drink where you're staying rather than drive to it.
Getting between the two
By car it's about twenty minutes along the coastal highway. Taxis run the route constantly, and the guaguas — the shared minibuses — do it for a few dollars, though they stop often. If you're flying into Puerto Plata (POP), you pass Sosúa on the way to Cabarete anyway: the airport is about 21 km from downtown Cabarete.
